A March snowstorm in Central New York can mess up anybody’s plans — even Dolly Parton’s.

Dolly was scheduled to perform at the Stanley Theatre in Utica in March 1993, but Mother Nature had other ideas. The Blizzard of ’93 hit the area, and her Saturday night concert had to be postponed.

But Dolly was already in town.

So what do you do when you’re Dolly Parton, you’re stuck in snowy Utica and your concert has been called off? Apparently, you go check out the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Dolly didn’t march in the parade, but she did watch it, giving Utica one of those wonderfully odd celebrity moments that sounds almost too good to be true: Dolly Parton, snowbound in Central New York, watching people parade through downtown Utica in the middle of a huge snowstorm.

And apparently the experience stuck with her.

Not long afterward, Dolly talked about being snowed in while appearing with David Letterman, joking about watching people in Utica hold a parade despite roughly two feet of snow. That’s about as good a description of Central New York determination as you’re going to get.

There was a happy ending for concertgoers, too.

After we recently shared this memory on Facebook, several people who were there filled in another part of the story. According to their recollections, Dolly simply took the stage at the Stanley the following night and performed the postponed concert without a problem.

So the weekend went something like this: Dolly Parton comes to Utica to perform, a massive snowstorm cancels the show, she watches the St. Patrick’s Day Parade instead, later tells David Letterman about the experience, and still manages to perform for Utica the next night.

Honestly, it may be one of the most Central New York celebrity stories ever.

The one thing we still haven’t found is a photograph of Dolly watching that parade. With all the people who were downtown that day, you have to think somebody took one.
