History Along the Mohawk: Firing a Cannon at Fort Stanwix

Sometimes we forget to enjoy experiences that are right underfoot. You may have visited Fort Stanwix in Rome during grade school, but visiting as an adult (with or without the kids/grandkids) is a whole new experience, and fun! Park Ranger Arielle Goellner, teaches me how to fire a cannon! You can see live cannon fire at the fort this summer on Saturday, July 4 and during the Seige of Fort Stanwix encampment on Saturday, August 15, 2026

Traditions Along the Mohawk: Vernon Downs

Who doesn’t know about Vernon Downs Harness Racing? People travel from miles around to experience the thrill of the race, but sometimes we locals forget to experience the fun ourselves. Join the 3rd, 4th, and 5th generation families, every Friday and Saturday Night at 5:05pm, gathering at the fence near the track to cheer on their horses! Grab dinner before, after, or during the race at the Miracle Mile Restaurant overlooking the track, or grab some food from the food truck and dine outside. 2026 Race Schedule HERE.

We interviewed the Gale family and 4th generation racing driver Truman “Night Train” Gale.

MV Soundscape with Matt Perry: Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

This small woodpecker is common in our area this time of year. It’s best known for drilling neat rows of tiny holes in tree bark to feed on the sap that leaks out.
